District of Columbia Committee Chairman Pete Stark is in his eleventh term as California's District Thirteen Representative. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he received a bachelor's degree from MIT and an MBA from the University of California. Stark was a banker before entering politics. He resides in Oakland, CA.

The District of Columbia Committee is concerned with the municipal affairs of Washington, D.C., including its proposed statehood. In 1973 Congress granted D.C. limited self-government, and in 1987, the Committee approved a bill--still unratified by the full House--granting statehood to the District.
